Kick Like a Pro: Mastering the Flutter, Breaststroke, and Dolphin Kicks
Kicking is the engine behind your swim, and mastering the right technique can make a huge difference in speed, balance, and efficiency. Let’s break down the three primary kicks: flutter, breaststroke, and dolphin.
Flutter Kick
Used in freestyle and backstroke, the flutter kick is a rapid, alternating movement from the hips. The key is to keep your legs straight but relaxed, with a slight bend at the knees. Small, fast kicks generate a steady propulsion and help keep your body aligned on the surface of the water.
Breaststroke Kick
This kick is all about timing and flexibility. Starting with heels drawn toward the hips, the feet turn outward and sweep in a circular motion before snapping back together. Known as the “frog kick,” it creates a powerful thrust but requires patience and precision to avoid wasting energy.
Dolphin Kick
Common in butterfly and underwater phases, the dolphin kick is a fluid, wave-like motion driven by the core and hips. Both legs move together, and the power comes from undulation, not brute force. A well-executed dolphin kick can give you a serious edge off starts and turns.
Each kick has its purpose. To swim like a pro, practice them separately and focus on rhythm, flexibility, and body alignment. The right kick can take your swimming to the next level.
